Underwhelming Global Debut for Disney’s Live-Action ‘Moana’ Impacts Revenue Expectations

by admin477351

Disney’s latest venture into live-action adaptations, Moana, claimed the top position at the North American box office over its opening weekend. However, the film’s earnings of $43 million in the U.S. and Canada fell short of initial expectations. Internationally, the movie garnered an additional $52 million, culminating in a global opening of $95 million against its hefty production budget of $250 million.

The film is directed by Thomas Kail and stars Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, with newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia playing Moana. While Lagaʻaia’s performance has been well-received, the film has faced criticism for sticking closely to the narrative of the 2016 animated version. This has resulted in mixed reviews, with a 34% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, although audiences have been more forgiving, especially families who seem inclined to recommend it despite the critiques.

Disney has seen significant successes with its live-action remakes in past years, though not all have hit the mark commercially. Moana’s initial performance at the box office has drawn parallels to the live-action Snow White, which similarly experienced a lukewarm debut. Analysts suggest that Moana’s opening was impacted by stiff competition from other family-friendly films vying for viewers’ attention simultaneously.

Several PG-rated movies released around the same time appear to have diverted potential audiences, but industry experts remain optimistic. They point out that family-oriented films often enjoy prolonged success if bolstered by positive word-of-mouth. Despite the slow start, there is potential for Moana to maintain a steady box office presence in the coming weeks.
