The United States Mint has commenced the production of a new commemorative $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump, as part of the festivities for the 250th anniversary of the United States, according to a recent announcement by the US Treasury Department. This special edition coin is slated for release in the upcoming fall season.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the coin aims to celebrate America’s rich heritage of liberty and patriotism, underscoring the nation’s enduring values and dedication to freedom. While the final design of the coin was approved earlier this year, the version currently being produced has undergone slight modifications from the initial concept. Notably, it now boasts a gold-colored finish, as opposed to being made of solid gold.
The obverse side of the coin prominently features a portrait of Donald Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY” and the dates “1776–2026.” It also bears the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.” On the reverse, the coin showcases the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Despite the celebratory intent, the announcement has sparked criticism due to a standing federal law that typically prohibits living presidents from being depicted on US currency. However, Treasury officials have clarified that the secretary holds the authority to approve certain commemorative coin issues under specific circumstances, thus justifying the issuance of this coin.
