Sunset Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea is gearing up to commemorate a significant milestone with a community event on October 25, 2026. This celebration marks the centennial of the opening of the original Sunset School campus building. As part of a larger initiative, the center will embark on a five-year celebration called “Century of Creativity | 1926–2031,” leading up to the 100th anniversary of its historic theater auditorium in 2031.
The free event, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., promises a rich array of activities, including live performances, visual art displays, historical exhibits, and campus tours. Performances are set to take place in the 718-seat historic theater and on the outdoor terrace from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The celebration will feature a range of cultural organizations and performers, such as the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, Chamber Music Monterey Bay, Youth Music Monterey, Carmel High School Chamber Singers, and Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre/TDC.
Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the Sunset Legacy Wall, a community art project that invites them to contribute artwork, memories, and messages reflecting the center’s impact on the community. Additionally, families and children can enjoy activities such as rock painting. The event will also offer live art, music, photography programs, oral-history collection, wellness activities, and guided tours of the historic property, providing a comprehensive look at the center’s transformation from a school campus to a cultural hub.
Local organizations like the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, The Carmel Foundation, Carmel Youth Center, Carmel Residents Association, and Carmel Woman’s Club will take part in the event, enriching the celebration with their contributions. Guests can enjoy complimentary refreshments, with the option to purchase additional food and beverages from Sunset Center concessions. This five-year celebration aims to highlight Sunset Center’s historical significance, extensive cultural programming, and its enduring connection with the Monterey Peninsula community.
