As privacy concerns around smart-home security technology continue to grow, Amazon-owned Ring is set to launch its Neighbours community app in the UK on October 21. This move comes amid ongoing discussions about the handling of personal data and police access to footage in the US, where Ring’s services have faced scrutiny.
The Neighbours app, which will be integrated into the existing Ring app, offers UK residents the ability to share local safety updates, community information, and reports of lost pets without the need to own a Ring device. Aimed at providing a streamlined alternative to larger platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook, users can set their address and choose a community radius ranging from 0.1 to five miles.
To ensure the platform remains safe and respectful, posts will be categorized and reviewed by both artificial intelligence and human moderators, with strict guidelines prohibiting illegal content, discrimination, and speculation. However, some features available to US users will not be included in the initial UK release. Notably absent are tools allowing organizations like fire departments to post local alerts and features enabling police to request camera footage linked to specific incidents. Ring is considering introducing these features in the UK at a later time.
In light of privacy concerns, Ring has introduced new measures in the US to enhance user control over footage access. The company recently launched a default encryption system called TAKE, which uses time-limited keys to protect recordings, preventing access unless users provide explicit consent.
Additionally, Ring will introduce a feature called Search Party for Dogs, designed to help locate missing pets. This service allows users to report missing dogs with photos and details. Owners of Ring cameras with eligible cloud subscriptions can opt-in to receive alerts about potential sightings captured by their cameras, with the option to share footage with the pet’s owner.
Since Amazon acquired Ring in 2018, the company has expanded its footprint in the smart-home security sector but has also faced challenges related to privacy and the use of its technology. As Ring’s Neighbours app makes its UK debut, the company will continue to navigate these complex issues while exploring future expansions of its service offerings.
