Following the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has conveyed her optimism about finding a peaceful resolution with the United States on matters related to Greenland and the Arctic. Frederiksen acknowledged the mounting pressures faced by Greenland and expressed gratitude for the support of European partners in these challenging times.
Denmark aims to enhance its collaboration with the United States, particularly concerning security and defense issues in Greenland. A high-level working group dedicated to Greenland is actively engaged in discussions. Although it is premature to draw definitive conclusions, Frederiksen remains hopeful about achieving positive progress through these ongoing talks.
The summit, which took place from September 13-14, centered on developing a unified European strategy for the Arctic, reflecting the region’s growing strategic and geopolitical significance. Frederiksen underscored the increasing cooperation between European and transatlantic allies on Arctic security. This collaboration is exemplified by several allied nations conducting military exercises in Greenland, highlighting a stronger European role in safeguarding the area.
