In a significant step towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure, the U.S. Department of Energy has approved final funding for an energy storage project at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the integration of advanced energy storage systems with existing renewable energy sources.
The project, spearheaded by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), a Michigan-based energy storage technology firm, involves the installation of a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system. This system will complement GTRLC’s current 185 kW solar photovoltaic setup, allowing for the storage and efficient use of solar-generated electricity. The initiative aims to bolster energy resilience and optimize the use of renewable power in the region.
Supported by Congressionally Directed Spending overseen by the Department of Energy, the project will utilize ABC’s patented GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology. This innovative technology is noted for its reduced lead content compared to traditional lead batteries, while still maintaining safety and recyclability. The batteries, developed and manufactured in Michigan, underscore the state’s significant role in the national energy storage supply chain.
Construction for the project has entered its procurement and manufacturing phase, with the installation and commissioning of the system slated for the second quarter of 2027. The storage system will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures, promising robust support for the solar array’s energy generation capabilities.
The collaboration between GTRLC and ABC not only highlights a commitment to sustainable energy solutions but also reflects broader trends in energy policy and technology focusing on local manufacturing and innovation. As the project progresses, it stands as a testament to the potential of advanced battery technologies in transforming energy storage and management practices.
