The U.S. administration under President Donald Trump has initiated a new task force, named the “Super Intelligence Force,” to address the risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Led by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton, the initiative aims to ensure that the United States maintains its technological edge while mitigating emerging security threats.
This task force will focus on identifying potential AI-related risks across various sectors such as financial services, energy, transportation, agriculture, and emergency services. Furthermore, it will address issues related to cybersecurity, biosecurity, water infrastructure, civil liberties, and the safeguarding of advanced AI systems. Federal agencies, including the Pentagon, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Trade Commission, will contribute to the task force’s endeavors.
According to the task force’s charter, the group is expected to deliver its recommendations to President Trump within 120 days. These recommendations will cover AI risks, security standards, and potential consequences of over-regulation. The task force may also consider whether AI laboratories should be mandated to report incidents such as security breaches and hacking attempts.
Chaired by Jay Clayton, the task force’s leadership team includes FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are also among its members, with former AI adviser David Sacks and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice participating as external contributors.
The initiative has faced criticism from Democratic lawmakers who question the effectiveness of the task force in implementing enforceable protections without legislative backing. Despite this, the administration has emphasized that AI oversight must balance security and public safety concerns with the necessity to foster technological innovation.
