In a significant development for American manufacturing, President Donald Trump has announced the construction of a $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa. This facility, which is being described as the largest of its kind in U.S. history, is expected to bolster the local economy and create thousands of jobs.
The project will be spearheaded by Mesabi Metallics, a steel company owned by the India-based Essar Group. Construction on the plant has already commenced, with production slated to begin by 2030. The facility will utilize iron ore from Mesabi Metallics’ mine in Minnesota to produce high-quality steel intended for the U.S. market.
Significant federal support will back the expansion, with the U.S. Export-Import Bank providing up to $10 billion in financing. Rewant Ruia, chairman of Mesabi Metallics, stated that while most critical materials would be sourced domestically, some specialized materials might need to be imported.
The establishment of the steel plant is projected to generate up to 6,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 positions in manufacturing and mining. This comes at a time when industrial investment and job creation are key political issues in Iowa, especially with the 2026 Senate election on the horizon.
President Trump attributed this investment to his administration’s tariffs on imported goods, which he claims have incentivized companies to invest in domestic manufacturing. This announcement underscores the administration’s focus on strengthening American industry and its economic impact on states like Iowa.
